Can dogs go in pubs?

In the UK, yes, at the landlord's discretion, and most traditional pubs actively welcome dogs. There is no blanket legal bar on dogs in pubs, and the majority of country pubs and a growing number of city pubs welcome them inside. In the US, it is a state-by-state matter, tied to alcohol and food service licensing, and increasingly common where the right rules apply.

The UK position

In the UK, a pub landlord can admit or refuse dogs as they see fit. There is no health and safety regulation that prohibits dogs in pubs, and licensing conditions do not ordinarily ban them. The decision is entirely the landlord's. Traditional country pubs have always been dog friendly, and that culture runs deep. In cities, the picture is more mixed, with some pubs explicitly welcoming dogs and others posting a no-dogs policy at the door. The trend is toward more welcome, not less.

Food-serving pubs

A pub that is also a restaurant, licensed under food business registration, may choose to restrict dogs from the dining area while admitting them to the bar. This is not a legal requirement; it is a business decision about the dining environment. Many pubs handle it by having a bar area where dogs are welcome and a separate dining room where they are not. Some let dogs in everywhere. Ask at the bar when you arrive.

The US position

In the US, the rules governing dogs in bars and taprooms are set at the state level and vary significantly. States that do not require a full food service licence for alcohol-only premises tend to be more permissive. Dog-friendly taprooms and brewery taprooms are now common in craft beer states like Oregon, Colorado and Michigan, where the culture actively encourages dogs in the space. Bars that serve food face stricter rules under most state health codes.

How to find dog friendly pubs near you

Ask Kali. She has a verified dataset of dog friendly venues including pubs, bars and taprooms across the UK and US, and can tell you which ones near you admit dogs inside, not just on the terrace. For the UK specifically, the dog-on-the-floor sign in the window is still the most reliable signal, but Kali can give you a list before you leave the house.
